Sacred Symbols

Lay Leader: Bob Gross

Why do human beings hold certain symbols in reverence and others in contempt? Why do symbols elicit such a variety of emotions? We will explore these themes; and then (weather permitting) we'll go outside to re-dedicate our peace pole, one of the most visible "sacred symbols" at our Fellowship.

Joint service at Thomas Paine at 10:00 AM

There will be no service at the UUFP

Guest Speaker:Rev. Kent Matthies, Unitarian Society of Germantown

Millions of Americans are hit hard in this recession. Many of us are just trying to get by, let alone save a little money. During tough economic times it is hard to know how to live spiritually. The Bible tells the story of a poor woman who poured expensive oil over Jesus' head. This was a lavish display coming from a woman who probably counted pennies. What does her story say about how we can live our own lives?Rev.

The Thomas Paine UUF invites UUFP to stay for their potluck meal following the service.

Chess a Minute
A Look at Chess in Real Life

Speaker: Dick Jokiel
Lay Leader: Lisa Jokiel

Chess, the oldest game in the world, which I have been playing since my father taught me at the age of six, is a game of multiple geometries; thoroughly challenging the mind. Today, school districts and independent groups promote chess to provide youth with a constructive alternative to life on the streets. It certainly helped keep me out of trouble during my teenage years. It teaches the need for planning and that decisions have consequences.

August 29, 2010 This Life is More Than Just a Read-Through

Lay Leader: Emily Quarles-Mowrer

Those of you who are familiar with the band the Red Hot Chili Peppers, may recognize my title from the lyrics of the song "Can't Stop". I guess that it goes to prove that if you are looking hard enough, you can find something to touch your spirit anywhere - even in rock music. Whether you believe that we have one chance or many chances, our choices matter, our actions matter and our lives matter.
